In ancient Greek religion, Astrea is a daughter of Astraeus and Eos, and was the Goddess of Justice and was the last of the immortals to live with humans during the Golden Age - one of the old Greek's five deteriorating Ages of Man. Astrea abandoned the earth during the Iron Age, fleeing from the new wickedness of humanity. She ascended to heaven to become the constellation Virgo. The nearby constellation Libra reflected her symbolic association with Dike, who in Latin culture as Justitia is said to preside over the constellation. In the Tarot, the 8th card, Justice, with a figure of Justitia, can thus be considered related to the figure of Astrea on historical iconographic grounds.According to legend, Astrea will one day come back to Earth, bringing with her the return of the utopian Golden Age of which she was the ambassador.
ASSOCIATION WITH DIKE
One of the Goddess Dike's epithets was Astraea, referring to her appearance as the constellation Virgo. According to Aratus' account of the constellation's origin, Dike lived upon Earth during the Golden and Silver ages, when there were no wars or diseases, men raised fine crops and did not yet know how to sail. They grew greedy, however, and Dike was sickened and left Earth for the sky, from which, as the constellation, she watched over the despicable human race at a distance. After her departure, the human race declined into the Bronze Age, when diseases arose and they learned how to sail.
ASTREA AS A SPIRITUAL ALLY
Astrea is a powerful guardian who can be called upon for assistance and spiritual protection from confusing situations. Astrea is often depicted with a mighty sword which she uses to "cut away" negative forces from one's life. She is believed to clean up any messy situation, and clear up your home or place of employment from negative spiritual energies. She can clean up your aura or energy field from negative forces. She is believed to clean up your mental state and remove any negative thought forms so that you may be able to evaluate and reason clearly. Astrea is venerated as a loving protector and defender of humanity against harmful spiritual forces.
